Julien Solé
Né en 1974 à Paris, Julien Solé a passé son
enfance en Italie et aux Etats-Unis.
Polytechnicien, ingénieur des Eaux et Forêts, il s'est installé
à Marseille pour dessiner, peindre mais aussi voyager, notamment
en Egypte, d'où sa famille est originaire
Born in 1974, Julien Solé spent his childhood
in Italy and the United States. A graduate of l’Ecole Polytechnique
and then l’Ecole des Eaux et Forêts, he has since settled
in Marseilles to draw and paint and as a base for his travels, most notably
to Egypt, from where his family originated.
J'étais
venu pour peindre Alexandrie. Je tournais dans la ville, à la recherche
de visages.
Les gens me regardaient, dubitatifs. Ils faisaient des gestes impatients
de la main pour demander tout à la fois : "Qui es-tu? Où
vas-tu? Mais que veux-tu à la fin?"
Un jour, sur la corniche, une jeune fille sans voile s'est approchée
et m'a offert des cerises.
Je l'ai suivie. Jour après jour, nous avons arpenté cette
ville qui nous scrutait,
les hommes dans les cafés, les femmes aux fenêtres.
Ici, la mer est verticale, c'est un drap bleu tendu vers le ciel.
Y a-t-il un bateau pour s'échapper?
Sous tes voiles, Alexandrie, j'aimerais voir si tu souris...
I came to paint Alexandria
and found myself wandering through the town searching for faces.
The people looked at me, dubious. With gestures of impatience, they asked
me at one and the same time, “Who are you? Where are you going?
What on Earth do you want?”
One day, on the Corniche, a young girl with no veil covering her hair
came up to me and offered some cherries.
I followed her. Day after day, we explored the town as it observed us:
the men in the cafés, women at the windows.
Here, the sea hangs vertically, a sheet of blue stretching towards the
sky.
Is there a boat on which one can escape?
Under your veils, Alexandria, I would love to see if you are smiling….
